In 2012, Gene retired from coaching and sought out new adventures. Reflecting back on the many seasons of basketball and having a passion to write and share the many inspiring and courageous stories has lead him to book writing. His first book,
"When the Nets Came Down for Brenda" was released in July of 2012.
The release of his second book "27 Two Tales of Perfection" is released in July of 2013.
During the 33 years of coaching, five were spent with high school girls. The next 15 years began his college coaching career at Doane College. Doane College is an NAIA team in southeast Nebraska. The final 13 years of coaching came at NCAA II Northwest Missouri State University.
Gene is also the owner of Malika Sport Tours, a travel coordinator service for teams desiring to take their teams to Hawai'i for the Oahu Classic and Hoop N Surf tournaments. He is married to Michelle and they have one son, Sam.
The worst thing about new books is that they keep us from reading the old ones.--John Wooden
